The foundation stone of Kpando Technical Institute Was laid by the first president of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on 23rd April, 1955. The Institute was officially opened for training on 22nd March, 1956 with 70 male students and 8 tutors and has remained the Premier Pre-tertiary Technical & Vocational institute in the region. The Institute is located at kpando in the kpando Municipal in Volta Region.
Kpando Technical Institute started as Gold Coast Trade School and had a British as its first Principal By name Mr. Mr John Hooton. The Instituteinitially began with four Departments namely:
Just immediately before or after the second intake to the courses in 1957, Mr. Hooton’s wife was taken seriously ill thus compelling Him to return to the U.K with the ailing wife and never returned.
Mr. Hooton’s place was taken by Mr A.O. Lanquaye, a builder who was transfered from Asuansi Trades School. He led to the execution of building projects. Water supply was from external sources, while Electricity was produce from the school’s own generating plant.
In January 1958, the trade school was re-designated junior technical institute and later became a full Technical Institute in 1964. This led to a dramatic and far reaching changes in the institution and the structure of our programmes.
The period 1959 – 1963 saw the introduction of City and Guilds of London Institute craft level courses. A two years pre-technical programme was also introduced.
Presently, the Institute runs 14 programmes in Engineering, Building Construction, Business and Hospitality studies.Kpando Technical Institute has prepared and sent many of its students into the world of work within and outside Ghana.
The Institution is proud to have its past trainees in places of responsibility in public and private sectors of the economy. Prominent among these are Valco in both the plant in Tema-Ghana and Canada, Tema Oil Refinery, Black Star Line, Ghana Armed Forces, the Textile Industry etc.
